The Height of Luxury: Seven Iconic Belmond Properties with Michelle Norwood

My Induction into the World of Iconic Belmond Properties

It’s no secret that I love a luxurious hotel. I personally believe that a hotel is as important as the vacation itself. My first encounter with Belmond was nothing short of magical. Since then, I’ve explored seven of their iconic Belmond properties, each offering a unique gateway into the opulent world of Belmond. Here is my personal induction into the world of iconic Belmond properties.

1. Villa San Michele, Firenze, Italy

Villa San Michele, Florence, Italy

My first stay with Belmond brought me to Florence, Italy, to a hotel nestled in the hills of Fiesole. Villa San Michele blends Renaissance artistry with breathtaking views of Florence. My stay here felt like residing in a secluded mountaintop sanctuary, with a view that spells out why this isn’t just a hotel, but a historical gem offering unparalleled solitude and beauty. This property, a 15th-century monastery with verdant gardens and a facade attributed to Michelangelo, provides more than just accommodations—it’s an opulent retreat you never need to leave.

With 45 uniquely charming rooms and suites, lush gardens, and a stunning mountaintop outdoor pool (trust me, it’s worth the climb), this place is a slice of heaven. My room was at the top because, like Julia Roberts said in Pretty Woman, “It’s the best.” The climb up was challenging, making me realize how out of shape I was, feeling like a total American.

Ordering room service was a must due to the view (if you prefer piping hot food, head to the restaurant). After 24 hours of soaking up the view and lounging at the pool, it was time to get dressed and head to dinner. With three restaurants to choose from, dining was a delight. La Loggia serves gourmet Tuscan cuisine, and I ate my way through a tomato farm. The cooking class here is a must for culinary enthusiasts.

2. Belmond Castello di Casole, Tuscany, Italy

Next, I ventured to the heart of the Tuscan countryside. Imagine a Tuscan castle amidst rolling hills, and you have Belmond Castello di Casole. This estate captivated me with its intimate connection to nature and history. I loved the smell of the wood-burning fireplaces and the peace of this countryside property. I arrived just as they opened in April, finding solace in the property’s tranquility.

My first night, like a true Italian, I enjoyed pizza and beer. The view from my room overlooking the rolling hills of Tuscany felt like a scene from a picture book. The next day, I eagerly rushed to my pizza-making class. Although my pizza crust wasn’t as good as the one I had the night before, I came home with the recipe, ready to perfect it. Later, I went on a countryside tour, hugging trees and connecting with the Tuscan landscape. Despite the spa being closed, the peaceful ambiance made up for it, offering a perfect, quiet escape.

3. Hotel Cipriani by Belmond, Venice, Italy

Arriving in Venice was like stepping into a fairytale. The high-speed train ride from Tuscany to Venice provided beautiful views of Italy. From the train, I went straight to a boat, for a magical ride through the waterways of Venice, finally arriving at Hotel Cipriani. There, I was greeted by the world-famous Walter Bolzonella. For more than 40 years, Walter, the head barman, has been crafting cocktails that perfectly match his guests’ moods. Walter is as much a part of Venice as the canals or the gondoliers. Everyone who visits Venice knows Walter, and it’s easy to see why—he’s a class act! Together, we crafted a cocktail before his retirement, creating an unforgettable moment.

Walter’s book, “Cocktails in Venice: Tales of a Barman,” chronicles his journey of turning new drinks into classics and refreshing classics with novel twists

My room overlooked the canals, offering a front-row seat to Venice’s morning buzz. Despite the chill, Cip’s Club and the bar provided warm, memorable evenings. Venice spells romance, and Hotel Cipriani embodies this spirit on the shores of Giudecca Island.

4. Villa Sant’Andrea, Sicily, Italy

Next, I traveled to Taormina, torn between which property to stay at. When tough decisions arise, stay at both! Villa Sant’Andrea, located on the shores of the Bay of Mazzarò, offers a picturesque escape with its private beach and views of the Sicilian coast.

As I waited for my room, I explored the property and enjoyed lunch. The villa’s history as a noble residence translates into an atmosphere of refined elegance, with each room and suite decorated to reflect Sicilian art and culture. After two nights, I was ready for a change but wondered if I would love the next property as much.

5. Grand Timeo, Taormina, Italy

A quick drive up the hill, I found myself at Grand Timeo, amidst the hustle and bustle of downtown Taormina. The view beckons you to stay, while the noise of the streets calls you. My accommodations were in the suites area, requiring more stairs, but the cozy room with a view was worth it.

I hit the city hard, spending most of my time away from the property, enjoying Michelin-star meals and breathtaking views. My tour of Italy with iconic Belmond properties was over, but it was time to jet down to the Caribbean for some sun with Belmond!

6. Las Samanna, St. Martin, Caribbean

A jewel on the French side of St. Martin, Las Samanna stands out for its sophistication and French Caribbean charm. Upon my arrival, I swear they docked two sailboats just for me to encapsulate the luxury of this property and the island. The boats called to me, and I ran to my room, changed into my bikini, and headed straight to the beach. After a quick dip and photo shoot, I had lunch in a private cabana, taking in the views and the sheer beauty of this locale.

My first night, I was whisked away to a villa for a private chef’s dinner. The sunset was nothing short of magical, the cuisine exceptional, and the villas made me want to pack my bags and relocate indefinitely.

The next day, I awoke and headed to breakfast. I haven’t mentioned it, but breakfast is included at all Belmond properties. Don’t think of those buffets at other hotel brands; this is a full spread of deliciousness. If you can think of it, they have it—made-to-order omelette and waffle stations, fruits, pastries, mimosas, and on and on. After breakfast, I headed down to the infinity pool overlooking the ocean. With activities ranging from water sports to wine tasting from a 12,000-bottle cellar, this resort is a slice of paradise.

With 83 rooms and suites, all featuring private balconies with ocean views, this property and my stay were a lavish retreat. I particularly enjoyed the infinity pool and the white sand beach where relaxation meets luxury. The wine cellar, boasting over 12,000 bottles, offers an exquisite tasting experience.

7. Cap Juluca, Anguilla, Caribbean

Last but definitely not least is Cap Juluca. To me, Cap Juluca is synonymous with “heaven on earth,” where island bliss finds its meaning. A quick 30-minute boat ride from St. Martin (the water is choppy, bring motion sickness medicine) brings you to this secluded beach resort boasting villas with private pools and terraces that spill onto white sand beaches, offering a sanctuary of privacy and luxury—a place I dream of returning to time and again.

From morning to evening, I found myself taking strolls, barefoot on the most beautiful beach in the Caribbean. From breakfast to dinner, each meal is a delightful treat to my senses. And let me add my barefoot beach dinner—it’s something special to eat with your toes in the sand under the stars of the Caribbean. Snorkeling, sailing, kayaking, fishing—you name it, they offer it. But this little lady headed to the spa for a 90-minute deep tissue massage that made my toes curl.

Cap Juluca is a sanctuary of romance and seclusion. Each of the 18 beachfront villas offers a private pool and stunning sea views. The minimalist decor emphasizes luxury and tranquility. It’s a paradise that beckons me back time and again—a true “Julucan” getaway, if you know, you know.
